Phippen Museum Permanent Collection continues to grow

In his lifetime, Western artist George Phippen completed thousands of pieces of artwork in pen and ink, bronze, watercolor and oil. But as prolific as he was, today, 46 years after his untimely death at the age of 50, these pieces are spread far and wide and held by various museums, businesses and private collectors all across the country.

So when the Phippen Museum was fortunate enough to recently bid on, and win, a Phippen original oil painting, staff, volunteers and museum members stood up and took special notice.

Titled The Crack of Dawn on a Cow Ranch this nocturnal oil on canvas was created by George in 1958. This stunning piece depicts three ranch hands shrouded in the first light of early morning as they prepare for another hard day’s work in the saddle. And the color, composition and subject matter perfectly reflect a morning ritual that has played out on cow ranches all across the country for more than a hundred years.

This art acquisition is part of the museum’s ongoing mission to preserve Art of the American West and George’s inspirational legacy. And because he is the institution’s namesake, the museum was especially proud to give this outstanding artwork a special place of honor in their Permanent Collection.

In the past 4 years, the Phippen Museum has concentrated on purchasing George’s artwork and has subsequently acquired 8 new Phippen oils and numerous watercolors, bronzes and pen and ink sketches by this gifted Western artist.

In addition to growing the Permanent Collection, the museum has also established an extremely successful Adopt-a-Painting program to protect and preserve some of their finest pieces of artwork. And in just two short months, six pieces of original Phippen artwork were adopted and are in the process of being restored, including a whimsical piece generously donated by Mr. Bruce Fee, titled Unforgiveable Sin. As a result, four more pieces have been hung in the museum’s entry gallery and are now available for adoption.

So if you haven’t heard of George Phippen or the Phippen Museum, you should do yourself (and your family) a favor and make time to see the recently expanded facility, several new permanent exhibits, their cultural hall, museum store and two concurrent exhibitions, including newly acquired artwork and this most recent acquisition.

The Phippen Museum is located at 4701 Hwy 89 N, just minutes north of historic downtown Prescott, Arizona. General admission is $7 for adults, $6 for AAA members, $5 for students with ID, and free to museum members and children 12 and under. For more information, please contact the museum at 928.778.1385, or visit their website at www.phippenartmuseum.org.
