GREAT OUTDOORS
Montezuma Castle National Monument near Camp Verde is a real cliff hanger..or should we say cliff dweller.
Back in 700 A.D. the Pre-Columbian Sinagua people (northern cousins of the Hohokams) call this home.
This is one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. The castle was carved into the limestone and it proved that the Sinaguas were advanced builders. It took ladders to climb Montezuma Castle and that was something that enemy tribes found hard to penetrate. Lowes and Home Depot did not arrive on the scene until a few years ago, finding a spare ladder laying around was unheard of.
In 1906, the site was declared a U.S. National Monument. And in 1966, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Drop in someday, and look up…..ladders are prohibited.
