Wupatki…one of the warmest driest places on the Colorado Plateau, even with little food or water, people lived and visited from far and wide. Trade items from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico have been discovered here. The origianl builders of Wupatki and nearby pueblos moved on, but on trails, and through items left behind, you will find their stories exciting.

Lava River Cave

Coconino Naional Forest, Flagstaff, AZ

The Flagstaff Lava Tube is a good day trip…close to town, easy to get to, and a real adventure. A lava tube’s unique formation allows you to walk into a volcano.

The lava cave is 40ºF year-round…dress appropriately and wear sturdy shoes. When entering a giant hole in the ground prepare yourself…it’s going to be dark and you’re going to get dirty. Make sure you have a flashlight. A headlamp is highly recommended so both hands are available to help you balance and navigate the tunnel. Bring extra batteries.

Your descent will move from giant rooms with 30-foot ceilings to narrow tunnels that will require crawling on your hands and knees. You’ll see large lava icicles hanging from the ceiling and smooth ripples on the ground where the last trickle of lava flowed.
